Wollongong CBD Tower Gains 6 Storeys in New Plan

A race is underway to build Wollongong's tallest building, with new plans lodged that would surpass the current tallest, the 21-storey Signature complex in Regent Street.

One contender is Level 33, which has taken over and renamed the WIN Grand development as Crown Square. The developer has an application to increase the height of five apartment towers, with the tallest reaching 38 storeys and 130 metres, while the second-tallest at 24 storeys and 87 metres would still exceed Signature.

Another proposal from Sydney-based Urban Property Group aims to build a 38-storey tower on the corner of Flinders and Station streets, currently the site of Wollongong City Motors. The $160 million North Wollongong development would include 270 apartments, 150 hotel rooms, and commercial space, with some apartments designed for co-living.

The presence of affordable housing and hotel rooms could allow the developer to receive bonuses from the state government and Wollongong City Council's tourism accommodation strategy. Online community briefings are planned for May 6 and May 7.

However, both towers could be surpassed if Level 33's plans for the old Bunnings site are approved. That proposal includes 1500 apartments across six towers, with three of them reaching 40 storeys, or about 140 metres, creating a three-way tie for the city's tallest building.
