Witnesses Stop Car Thief Fleeing Crash Scene, Police Say

Witnesses prevented an accused car thief from leaving the scene of a head-on crash he allegedly caused, according to police. Joshua Slattery, 36, of Coombs, was arrested on Saturday, January 10, and faced the ACT Magistrates Court two days later on Monday.

Slattery did not apply for bail and did not enter pleas to charges of dangerous driving and two counts each of taking a motor vehicle without authority and driving a motor vehicle without consent. ACT Policing said officers were called on the morning of the incident about a stolen Skoda Scala driving at speed and on the wrong side of the road.

The allegedly stolen car eventually caused a head-on collision with another vehicle in Yarralumla. Slattery is also accused of stealing a second car earlier that morning by taking a pair of keys from a locker at a Phillip gym. That car was found at a shopping centre in Woden and returned to its owner.
