An 18-year-old driver has died after a serious crash on the Mitchell Freeway in Wembley, causing major traffic disruptions for at least five hours. The incident occurred on the northbound lanes near the Powis Street exit when the driver lost control of a white Nissan Patrol, causing the vehicle to roll.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Police closed the northbound freeway from Vincent Street to Hutton Street, forcing motorists to exit as congestion built up while a major crash investigation was launched.
This marks the second fatal crash in Western Australia within 24 hours. On Saturday, a 61-year-old female motorcyclist died in hospital after a collision involving a ute on Tonkin Highway. Major crash officers are investigating both incidents and are appealing for witnesses.
Anyone who witnessed either crash or has dash-cam or mobile phone footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or via their website. Footage related to the freeway crash can be uploaded directly to investigators through a dedicated online portal.
