Rescue Mission Underway for Miner Trapped 1km Underground in Queensland

A rescue operation is ongoing at the Curragh coalmine in central Queensland after a roof collapse left one worker missing and potentially trapped up to one kilometre underground.

Emergency services were called to the mine, located north of Blackwater about 200 kilometres west of Rockhampton, around 3pm on Friday. Two workers were safely recovered, with one taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a third worker remains unaccounted for.

Queensland’s acting minister for natural resources and mines, Tony Perrett, confirmed that rescue crews remain onsite and are doing everything possible. “My thoughts are with all of those involved, their loved ones, the entire mining community,” he said.

The Curragh coalmine, which has been in operation since 1983, covers approximately 256 square kilometres across two separate mines. Search operations continued on Saturday as crews work to locate the missing miner.
