Nestlé has recalled select batches of its Alfamino infant formula in Australia due to possible contamination with a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting. The recall is a precautionary measure, the company said.
The affected product is sold through select pharmacies and hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. The recall is due to potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus.
“The safety of infants is our top priority, and we apologise for any concern this may cause,” said Michael Edde, general manager of Nestlé Health Science. “This recall is a precautionary measure, in line with our strict product quality and safety protocols.”
Nestlé advised parents who are concerned to seek medical advice. No other Alfamino batches or products in Australia or New Zealand are affected by this recall.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) stated that affected products should not be consumed and should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the recalled products.
