A 27-year-old man accused of breaking into multiple businesses across the Illawarra has been granted strict bail after a judge warned him against reoffending. Kahlib Fleming faced Wollongong Local Court on Friday, charged with 17 offences including 11 counts of break and enter and steal.
Police allege Fleming targeted eight businesses—including cafes and restaurants—in Corrimal, Bulli, Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, and Gwynneville during a week-long spree in March. Items stolen allegedly included cash and passports.
Defence lawyer Matthew Zappia argued the prosecution's case was weak, relying on circumstantial evidence such as clothing and cell tower data. He noted Fleming's partner is pregnant and that he recently underwent surgery for a broken jaw.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Uren opposed bail, citing Fleming's criminal history and noting that periods of incarceration had not deterred him. However, the judge released Fleming on conditions including house arrest, a nightly curfew, daily reporting to police, and a ban on alcohol and non-prescribed drugs.
“If you have committed these offences, that is a very silly thing to do given your responsibilities,” the judge said, warning that any breach of bail would result in immediate detention. The matter was adjourned for two weeks.
