Alleged Fuel Thief Caught After $2870 Diesel Theft in Sydney

A 22-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stealing nearly $2900 worth of diesel from a petrol station in Sydney’s south. Police say the incident occurred around 7:15pm on April 11, when the man filled multiple large drums and jerry cans with diesel at a service station.

The total amount of fuel taken was 915 litres, valued at $2870. After filling the containers, the man allegedly drove away in his white ute without paying the kiosk clerk.

Following an investigation, the accused was arrested at Goulburn Police Station on Thursday. He was issued a court attendance notice for dishonestly obtaining property by deception and granted bail. He is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Court on June 15.

Fuel thefts from service stations have reportedly increased since the start of the Middle East conflict, but even before the war, fuel 'drive-offs' cost retailers around $80 million annually.
