Aged Care Worker Charged with Stealing $30,000 from 104-Year-Old Patient

An aged care worker in Queensland has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a 104-year-old patient. The elderly man, residing in a Redland Bay facility, reported his credit card missing in August, prompting staff to notify police.

Queensland Police allege a female employee stole the card and used it for personal purchases and withdrawals between August 19 and August 21. Over three days, the woman allegedly spent $30,000 on the card.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested at a home in Birkdale on Tuesday and has been charged with 40 counts of stealing, one for each transaction. She is expected to appear before Cleveland Magistrates Court on November 11.

Police described the act as “despicable conduct” and are investigating to ensure no other residents were affected. Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said, “Offences of this nature are a terrible breach of trust against some of our most vulnerable members in society.”

Elder abuse, including financial exploitation, affects one in six older Australians, though many do not seek help. Authorities urge the public to report suspected elder abuse immediately.
