A 13-storey mixed-use tower has been approved for the burgeoning Newcastle West precinct. The $14 million proposal at 970 Hunter Street, next to Fantastic Furniture, has received the green light from Newcastle council.
The site contains a car yard and an auto repair workshop, which will be demolished to make way for the 44-metre residential building. The high-rise will house 30 apartments, a commercial space, and car parking for 26 spaces, including 15 for residents.
The 11 residential floors will be made up of three one-bedroom apartments and 27 two-bedroom units. The proposal exceeds the permitted floor space ratio by 7.76 per cent.
However, the City of Newcastle determined the variation would not create significant adverse impacts on neighbouring properties and was considered an 'orderly and economic' use of the land. The site was originally used as a service station and auto repair workshop.
Asbestos was found on the ground surface during site investigations, which will be removed before construction begins. The development is the latest approval in a string of high-rises planned for the Newcastle West precinct, including the 99-metre Dairy Farmers project being constructed two blocks away.
