Chiltern Railways has been forced to cut up to half of its services as the United Kingdom swelters under a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C in some areas. The operator imposed emergency speed restrictions and cancelled dozens of trains on Monday, causing widespread delays and frustration among passengers.
Service Reductions and Speed Limits
The company announced that it would run a reduced timetable, with services between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street, as well as routes to Oxford and Aylesbury, significantly affected. Trains are limited to 30 mph on certain sections of track to prevent buckling in the extreme heat. A spokesperson for Chiltern Railways said: "The safety of our passengers and staff is our top priority. We advise customers to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys."
Heatwave Impact Across the Network
The heatwave has also impacted other operators, with Network Rail warning of potential delays and cancellations across the country. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat, urging people to stay hydrated and avoid travel during the hottest part of the day. According to the Rail Delivery Group, around 20% of trains nationwide were delayed or cancelled due to heat-related issues on Monday.
Passenger Frustration
Passengers took to social media to express their anger at the sudden changes. One traveler, Sarah Jenkins, said: "I had to wait over an hour for a train to London. No information was given at the station, and the app was useless." Chiltern Railways has advised passengers to seek refunds or travel on alternative dates.
