Hutton Street Extension Delayed to 2027 Despite Approval

The long-awaited extension of Hutton Street in Osborne Park has cleared a key planning hurdle, but the project's construction schedule has been pushed back. Main Roads WA has endorsed the final 100 per cent detailed design for stage one of the extension, which will be known as Mineral Road. This stage will link Hutton Street from Scarborough Beach Road through to Walters Drive.

Construction was previously expected to begin at the end of 2026, but is now expected to start in mid-2027 and be completed by mid-2028, rather than the end of 2027. The estimated cost of stage one of the extension is currently $4.8 million.

A future stage two extension, which would extend the road from Walters Drive to Jon Sanders Drive, is still under development. A 165-metre extension of Hutton Street from Scarborough Beach Road was completed in 2013; since then, the road has ended abruptly at a dead end.

Concept design work for the extension to Walters Drive began in August 2023. Demolition works for stage one were completed in July 2024, clearing the area for the project to progress, but it still remains subject to State Government funding before construction can begin.

According to City of Stirling mayor Mark Irwin, the city has invested more than $400,000 in the planning, design and development of stage one of the Hutton Street extension. He believes this reflects the city's commitment to delivering a well-designed project that meets community needs.

However, for the project to proceed, State Government support will be required. “Construction of stage one remains subject to external funding contributions through the WA Government’s metropolitan regional road group road improvement program,” Mr Irwin said. “The project is set to be co-funded, with the WA Government contributing approximately two-thirds of the construction cost through its MRRG program and the city contributing the remaining third.”
