As Canberra shivers through one of its coldest winters, the Handmade Market is stepping up for the tenth year to collect blankets for those in need. The annual blanket drive, which runs until August 31, aims to gather new or gently used blankets to distribute to local charities and shelters.
A Warm Gesture in a Cold Season
Organizers of the Handmade Market, held at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), have been coordinating this community effort since 2014. The drive has become a staple of the market's winter season, with thousands of blankets collected over the years. This year, the need is particularly acute due to the prolonged cold snap and rising cost of living.
"We've seen a significant increase in demand from our partner charities," said market director Julie Smith. "Many families are struggling to keep their homes warm, and a blanket can make a world of difference."
How to Donate
Donations can be dropped off at the Handmade Market's information booth during market hours, which are Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. The market also accepts monetary donations online, which are used to purchase new blankets. All collected items are distributed to organizations such as St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army, and local homeless shelters.
"Every donation, no matter how small, helps us provide warmth and comfort to someone in need," Smith added. "We encourage everyone to check their cupboards for any unused blankets and consider donating."
Community Response
The Canberra community has shown tremendous support for the drive over the years. Local businesses have also joined in, offering drop-off points and matching donations. The Handmade Market itself has contributed by donating a portion of entry fees during the drive period.
"It's heartwarming to see so many people coming together to help others," said regular market-goer Sarah Thompson. "I donated a few blankets today, and it feels great to know they'll go to someone who really needs them."

Since its inception, the blanket drive has collected over 5,000 blankets, providing warmth to thousands of individuals and families across Canberra. The initiative has also raised awareness about homelessness and the challenges faced by vulnerable communities during winter.
