Australia's FIFA World Cup campaign has been dealt a major blow with attacking midfielder Riley McGree ruled out due to a hamstring injury. McGree sustained the injury during Middlesbrough's 1-0 Championship playoff loss to Hull City. His absence is a significant setback for the Socceroos ahead of the tournament.
In addition, veteran striker Mitch Duke has announced the end of his international career. The 35-year-old, who scored 13 goals in 50 appearances for Australia, posted on social media: '50 and out. Wasn’t meant to be.' Duke is among eight players released from the pre-tournament training camp.
The Socceroos are currently in Florida preparing for a friendly against Mexico at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Eight new players have been added to the camp, including captain Mat Ryan, defenders Alessandro Circati, Lucas Herrington, Kai Trewin, and Kye Rowles, midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler, winger Awer Mabil, and uncapped striker Tete Yengi.
Midfielder Cameron Devlin expressed heartbreak for the released players, saying: 'I’m heartbroken for them ... because none of them would want that.' He emphasized the high level of training and the privilege of being in camp. The final 26-man squad for the World Cup will be announced after the friendly against Mexico.
