Manchester United teenager James Overy has been named in the Socceroos squad for the first time, headlining 11 inclusions for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. The 17-year-old right-back, who turns 18 this weekend, impressed with the Young Socceroos at the U20 World Cup and recently signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils.
Veterans Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree return from foot injuries, while Adelaide United captain Craig Goodwin is also back in the squad. Uncapped striker Deni Jurić, brother of former Socceroo Tomi Jurić, earns his first call-up at 28, and Al Hassan Toure joins his brother Mohamed in the squad for the first time.
Australia face Venezuela on November 15 (AEDT) in Houston, Texas, then Colombia on November 19 (AEDT) in Queens, New York. Both matches will be played in host cities for next year's World Cup finals.
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic said the squad provides an opportunity to expand depth and integrate domestic players. Injuries to Alessandro Circati, Jordy Bos, Jacob Italiano and Aziz Behich also influenced selections.
