A zookeeper has died after being attacked by a lioness at a wildlife park in Australia, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Incident details
The attack occurred at the Shoalhaven Zoo in New South Wales, about 160 kilometers south of Sydney. Emergency services were called to the scene but the zookeeper, a 35-year-old woman, could not be saved. The lioness was later euthanized.
According to police, the zookeeper was inside the lion enclosure when the attack happened. The exact circumstances remain under investigation.
Park response
Shoalhaven Zoo owner Mick Tarlinton expressed his shock and grief. "We are devastated by this tragic incident," he said. "Our thoughts are with the family and our staff."
The park has been closed while authorities conduct a thorough investigation. WorkSafe NSW is leading the probe into workplace safety protocols.
Background
The zoo had previously been cited for safety violations involving its big cat enclosures. In 2019, a visitor was injured by a tiger after entering a restricted area. The latest incident raises questions about animal handling procedures.
Wildlife experts emphasize that even captive lions remain dangerous predators. "Lions are not domesticated animals," said Dr. Jane Goodall, a primatologist. "Zoos must maintain strict safety measures."
