Bayswater City have been knocked out of the Australian Championship after a 4-1 defeat to Wests APIA in Sydney on Sunday. The result meant City missed the quarterfinals on goal difference, finishing third in their group.
APIA took the lead through Franco Farinella, who tapped in a cross from Presley Ortiz. Farinella scored again just before halftime to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Bayswater City's chances suffered a further blow when Scottish midfielder Sean McManus was sent off.
Despite being a man down, City pulled one back through Aidan Edwards, who chipped the ball over APIA goalkeeper Oliver Kalac. However, APIA responded quickly, and Oscar Gonzalez scored on his senior debut to seal a 4-1 win for the Sydney side.
The result allowed MetroStars to leapfrog City into second place after they defeated Sydney United 58 2-0. Both teams finished on 10 points, but MetroStars advanced due to a superior goal difference. Bayswater City thanked their supporters, known as the 'Famiglia', for their backing throughout the national campaign.
