More than 70 public schools in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) were closed on Monday following a recall of children's sand products due to potential asbestos contamination. The recall, issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), also led to closures in Tasmania and New Zealand.
The ACCC recalled several sand products sold at major retailers including Officeworks, Kmart, and Target after laboratory testing detected asbestos in some samples. Officeworks also voluntarily recalled additional products.
Despite the closures, the consumer watchdog has stated that the risk to children is low. Authorities are continuing to investigate the source of the contamination and advise parents to check recalled products.
