Wellington Point State High School is mourning the sudden death of a Year 12 student just days before the graduation ceremony. Emergency services were called to a venue in Brisbane's east on November 18 after the student was found unresponsive.
Principal Deanne Wallwork informed parents and caregivers the following day, confirming the distressing event. 'It is with a heavy heart that I must share the news of the passing of one of our students,' she wrote. 'Our thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to their family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.'
The principal urged guardians to monitor students' social media activity, asking them to encourage their children not to share or comment online about the incident. 'The most respectful way we can support the student's family and friends is by maintaining their privacy,' Wallwork said.
The Year 12 graduation ceremony, held four days after the incident, was planned 'appropriately and sensitively'. Photos shared by the school showed the student honoured on screen as two classmates held a certificate in his place.
Police described the death as 'non-suspicious' and 'sudden', and a report will be prepared for the coroner. The Queensland Department of Education confirmed guidance officers and Youth Support Workers are on site to provide support for students, staff, and families.
