The Australian government has updated its list of social media platforms banned for users under 16, effective December 10. Message board Reddit and video streaming platform Kick have been added to the existing ban list, which includes TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, X, and YouTube.
Communications Minister Anika Wells confirmed that the controversial game Roblox will not be banned, despite evidence that it has been used by predators to target children. She explained the decision in an interview with Raf Epstein on 774 ABC Melbourne Mornings.
The ban is part of ongoing government efforts to protect minors online. The updated list reflects concerns over platforms that facilitate communication and content sharing among young users.
Minister Wells emphasized that the government's reforms aim to create a safer digital environment for children, while balancing the need for age-appropriate access to online services.
