Two men arrested after police find weapons and cash
Two men have been taken into custody in Canberra after police allegedly discovered a cache of weapons and a significant amount of cash during a routine vehicle stop. The arrest occurred on Tuesday evening in the suburb of Phillip, where officers from ACT Policing's Operation TORIC stopped a vehicle for a random check.
During the search, police claim to have found two firearms, two stun guns, and approximately $10,000 in cash. The items were allegedly concealed within the vehicle. The two occupants, both men aged in their 20s, were arrested at the scene without incident.
Operation TORIC targets firearm-related crime
Operation TORIC is a dedicated ACT Policing initiative aimed at disrupting and preventing firearm-related crime in the Australian Capital Territory. The operation focuses on proactive patrols and intelligence-led policing to target individuals involved in illegal firearm possession and trafficking.
According to police, the arrests were the result of ongoing efforts to reduce gun violence and keep the community safe. A spokesperson for ACT Policing said, "This is a significant result for Operation TORIC and demonstrates our commitment to removing illegal firearms from our streets."
Charges and court appearance
The two men have been charged with multiple offences, including unlawful possession of firearms, possession of prohibited weapons, and dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime. They are expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Police have not ruled out further charges as investigations continue. The seizure of the cash is also being examined to determine if it is linked to other criminal activity.
Community impact and police call for information
The discovery has been welcomed by local residents, who have expressed concerns about gun crime in the area. Police are urging anyone with information about illegal firearms or suspicious activity to come forward. Information can be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
ACT Policing has reiterated that community safety remains a top priority and that operations like TORIC will continue to target those who pose a risk to public safety.
