The Other Side to ACT Gov Parking Blitz at Sportsgrounds

A Dickson resident has highlighted the other side of the ACT government's controversial parking blitz at local sportsgrounds, pointing to safety risks and ignored parking alternatives.

The resident contacted The Canberra Times to draw attention to the dangerous parking situation on Antill Street in Dickson, where cars are regularly parked on the median strip of a busy four-lane road during Saturday soccer games. They noted that young children often dart between the parked cars to cross the road, creating a serious safety hazard.

Despite the apparent chaos, the resident pointed out that Dickson College, located less than 300 metres from the playing fields, has about 200 empty car parks that parents and players choose to ignore. A quick look at Google Maps confirms the proximity of the college's parking to the sportsgrounds.

The Canberra Times previously reported that the Dickson playing fields are the busiest sportsgrounds in Canberra, with more than 6000 booking hours per year. This high usage appears to be leading to widespread flouting of parking laws.

The ACT government recently conducted a parking blitz targeting four sportsgrounds—Kaleen, Harrison, O'Connor, and Dickson—which sparked outrage among the soccer community, especially given the poor state of some Canberra grounds. However, the government defended the blitz, citing safety concerns similar to those raised by the Dickson resident.

Parking fines in Canberra range from $137 to $700, and last year the government collected $3,848,019 from 59,785 parking fines.

The resident urged that using the nearby school car parks would solve the problem: no more parking tickets for parents and players, and safer conditions for motorists and children. They noted that the issue has been ongoing for years despite the presence of no-parking signs.

This debate highlights the tension between the need for accessible sports facilities and the importance of road safety and compliance with parking regulations.
