Henry Nowak murder: Two officers under gross misconduct probe

Two police officers involved in the case of murdered student Henry Nowak have been placed under investigation for gross misconduct by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The investigation follows a formal complaint from Nowak's family and will also examine whether race was a factor in the officers' actions.

Background of the case

Henry Nowak, 18, died in December 2025 after being stabbed by Vickrum Digwa in Southampton. Digwa falsely told police he had been the victim of a racist attack, leading officers to handcuff Nowak and treat him as a suspect, despite Nowak stating he had been stabbed and could not breathe.

IOPC changes stance

Initially, the IOPC had treated the officers involved as witnesses, indicating they believed no wrongdoing had occurred. However, on Wednesday, the IOPC announced a change in view following meetings with the Nowak family and their lawyer, as well as a formal complaint from the family. The officers are now under investigation for gross misconduct.

Allegations of racial bias

The case has sparked claims that Nowak's treatment stemmed from an anti-white bias. The IOPC's expanded investigation will consider whether race was a factor in the officers' decision to handcuff Nowak despite his injuries.

Family's response

The Nowak family has welcomed the IOPC's decision to upgrade the investigation. Their lawyer stated, "The family has fought for accountability, and this is a crucial step towards justice for Henry." The IOPC confirmed that the investigation will scrutinize the actions of the two officers thoroughly.
