Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor from Gaza, has emerged from Israeli detention with severe injuries that have left him almost unrecognizable, according to his family and legal representatives. The doctor, who was arrested by Israeli forces in early 2025, was released on July 5, 2026, and immediately transferred to a hospital in Gaza for treatment.
Condition Upon Release
According to his brother, Ahmed Abu Safiya, Dr. Abu Safiya's face was swollen, he had multiple bruises and lacerations, and he could barely speak. “He did not look like the person we knew. His face was disfigured, and he had difficulty moving his limbs,” Ahmed said. Medical staff at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City confirmed that the doctor had suffered fractures to his ribs and arms, as well as possible internal injuries.
Dr. Abu Safiya, a 45-year-old orthopedic surgeon, was arrested during a raid on a clinic in northern Gaza. Israeli authorities have not released details of his arrest or detention, but his family claims he was subjected to physical abuse and denied medical care.
International Response
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed deep concern over the doctor's condition. OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke said, “We are appalled by the reported injuries to Dr. Abu Safiya. International law prohibits the mistreatment of detainees, and we call for a full investigation.”
Amnesty International also condemned the incident, stating that the doctor's treatment appears to be part of a pattern of abuse against Palestinian detainees. “This is yet another example of the systematic ill-treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody,” said Amnesty’s Middle East director Heba Morayef.
Israeli Position
Israeli officials have not directly commented on Dr. Abu Safiya's case but have previously denied allegations of systematic abuse. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that all detainees are treated in accordance with the law and that any allegations of misconduct are investigated. However, human rights groups have documented numerous cases of mistreatment, including torture, in Israeli prisons.
Doctor's Background
Dr. Abu Safiya was a well-known figure in Gaza, having worked at several hospitals and clinics throughout the territory. He was particularly known for his work with children and trauma patients. His arrest was part of a broader crackdown by Israeli forces in the wake of the 2023 conflict, which saw thousands of Palestinians detained.
His release came as part of a prisoner exchange mediated by Egypt, but his family says they were not informed of his condition until his release. “We thought he would come home, but he came to a hospital bed,” said his wife, Amal.
Ongoing Concerns
The case has reignited calls for international monitoring of Israeli detention facilities. Human rights organizations have urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be granted full access to all detainees. The ICRC has stated that it visits detainees in Israeli prisons but has not been able to confirm the conditions of all Palestinian prisoners.
As Dr. Abu Safiya undergoes treatment, his family and supporters are demanding accountability. “We want the world to see what happened to him,” said his brother. “This is not justice. This is cruelty.”
