A young Australian couple has expressed their frustration after receiving a threatening letter from neighbours accusing them of neglecting their dogs, less than 24 hours after moving into their new home.
In a viral TikTok video, user Jas shared the incident, stating, 'We've been in our house for a week, and we already have beef with the neighbours. Fun fact, it was within 24 hours of us moving in.'
Jas explained that her partner, Ben, discovered the letter in their mailbox, which alleged that their two dogs were being left on a balcony for extended periods and appeared distressed. The letter read, 'Please take this as a first and final notice,' warning that if the issue was not resolved within seven days, a complaint would be made to the RSPCA and Brisbane City Council.
However, Jas said the claims were unfair and failed to consider the circumstances. 'For context, the reason the dogs were on the balcony - we were at home when this letter got sent - was because we have no fence in our house yet,' she said. She explained that electricians were working inside the property at the time, making it unsafe for the dogs to remain indoors.
According to Jas, the dogs were only on the balcony for about an hour and were barking due to the unfamiliar activity around the home. 'The 'prolonged period of time', by the way, was maybe an hour. They were distressed because there was a lot going on.'
The couple argued that neighbours should have given them more time to settle in before escalating the issue. 'Give us at least a week of continuous behaviour before you put a f***ing letter in our mailbox,' Jas said. Ben added, 'Any normal person would wait for repeat behaviour until you send something like this.'
Ben said he suspected he knew who had written the letter and considered knocking on doors to find out. At the end of the video, the couple introduced their two dogs, believed to be an Appenzeller Sennenhund and a Labrador.
The clip has amassed almost one million views, more than 49,000 likes, and hundreds of comments, with many viewers siding with the homeowners. 'Our neighbour's dogs genuinely bark 24/7 and I've still never sent a letter about it,' one person wrote. 'My neighbour's dogs bark all the time and I've barely said anything,' another said. 'You shouldn't have to explain yourself. They're your dogs. Mine bark when they're outside. They're literally dogs.'
Others shared similar experiences. 'Fun fact, we got a letter for our noisy dogs a few months after we moved in. We don't even have any dogs,' one viewer wrote. Another claimed they installed a camera after receiving complaints about excessive barking, only to discover the noise was coming from a different dog. A third said their neighbours were understanding when their dog struggled to adjust after moving house, reassuring them it was only temporary and nothing to worry about.
