A suspected shoplifting incident at a Brisbane shopping centre took a tragic turn on Wednesday morning when a man collapsed and died while fleeing the scene.

Police were called to the Brookside Shopping Centre on Osborne Rd in Mitchelton about 10.50am following reports of a theft. Within 10 minutes, responding officers located the man nearby, where he had collapsed and was found unresponsive.

Despite the immediate intervention of the arriving police, the man could not be saved. Police officers attempted CPR on the unresponsive man, but he was declared dead at the scene.

"Officers immediately commenced CPR; however, it was unsuccessful, and the man was declared deceased at the scene," police said in a statement.

The area was quickly cordoned off as emergency services attended to the medical emergency. Police said the circumstances surrounding the death will be continue to be investigated.
