Bondi Hero Charged with Assault on Father

Ahmed al Ahmed, widely celebrated for his heroism during the Bondi terror attack, has been charged with assault following an alleged altercation with his father in March. The man who bravely confronted a gunman in Australia's deadliest terror incident was served a court attendance notice on Wednesday.

He faces charges of common assault (domestic violence) and stalk/intimidate with intent to cause fear of physical harm (domestic). According to Seven News, Mr. al Ahmed is accused of placing his elderly father in a headlock at his home. Police have also obtained an apprehended violence order on behalf of the father, requiring Mr. al Ahmed to stay at least 100 meters from his father's home and workplace and prohibiting any assault, stalking, harassment, or contact.

Mr. al Ahmed is scheduled to appear before Bankstown Local Court on July 29. This development comes as his two brothers remain accused of threatening Mr. al Ahmed over the phone and attempting to extort $100,000 each from him. Police allege the brothers threatened to harm him while demanding the money; both have pleaded not guilty.

Following his heroic actions during the Bondi massacre, Mr. al Ahmed received $2.6 million from an online fundraiser, partly contributed to by a Jewish-American billionaire. The Syrian-born father was shot five times after leaping at gunman Sajid Akram during the December 14 attack, managing to wrestle the rifle from his grasp. He was later flown to the United States as a guest of honor at a Jewish Chabad function and was recognized alongside other first responders at the SCG test match. He also received accolades at Australia Day awards and from the local council in Sydney's east.
