Greater Manchester Police have recovered the body of a boy from a reservoir in Manchester, following a major search operation. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon during the ongoing UK heatwave, which has seen temperatures soar above 30°C.
Search and recovery operation
Emergency services were called to the reservoir in the Droylsden area at around 3:30 PM after reports that a child had entered the water and failed to resurface. A massive search involving police divers, fire crews, and an air ambulance was launched. The boy's body was found shortly before 6 PM.
Police have not yet officially identified the victim, but local reports suggest he was a 12-year-old boy. Superintendent Chris Downey of Greater Manchester Police said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the boy at this devastating time. We would urge everyone to be cautious around open water, especially during the current hot weather."
Heatwave dangers
The UK is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 32°C in some parts of the country on Sunday. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat, urging people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Drowning incidents often increase during hot weather as people seek to cool off in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, an average of 400 people drown accidentally each year in the UK, and many of these deaths occur in open water during the summer months. The charity advises that swimming in reservoirs is particularly dangerous due to cold water shock, hidden currents, and underwater obstacles.
Community response
Local residents have expressed shock and sadness at the incident. Flowers and tributes have been laid near the reservoir. One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's absolutely heartbreaking. So many children come here to play, and now this has happened. We need better safety measures."
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning, but they do not suspect foul play. A file will be prepared for the coroner.
