South-east Australia has been warned to brace for wild weather, with heavy rain and damaging winds set to lash the region as winter makes its presence felt.
The Bureau of Meteorology on Monday issued several severe weather warnings for New South Wales and Victoria overnight and into Tuesday.
Severe Weather Warnings in Place
A severe weather warning for damaging winds is in place for parts of the Mid-north Coast, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Northern Tablelands, Hunter and South-west Slopes forecast districts in NSW. The same warning is active for parts of Victoria's East Gippsland, North-east, West and South Gippsland, Central and North-central forecast districts.
Sky News Weather Meteorologist Marina Neuman explained that the high winds could bring blizzard conditions in parts of the state on Tuesday.
"New South Wales already has severe weather warnings issued, despite the fact that the system is still well to the west of the region. This is already in advance for what is to come, especially for Tuesday," she said.
"So this is warning us right now of the strong wind and blizzard conditions that are likely to impact not only just the alpines, but well across the central interior of the state."
Heavy Rain and Cooler Temperatures
Victoria, Tasmania and even parts of South Australia will be buffeted throughout Tuesday, while heavy rain is also set to sweep across the region.
"Looking at total rainfall over the next 24 hours, likely to see about 30 millimetres across Dubbo through Orange all the way to the alpines where we're seeing the stronger and heavier rainfall," Neuman said. "Canberra likely to see at least 50 millimetres."
The wild weather is also set to bring cooler temperatures, which Neuman added are forecast to linger over the rest of the week.
"Yet another trough moves in on Thursday, brings ongoing showers, and again, likely to see some blizzard conditions across the alpines," she said.
