Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac returned to Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, for the annual Sick Kids Day fundraiser, spending the morning meeting young patients and their families.

Ruby's Brave Journey

Among those he met was 14-year-old Ruby from Darwin, who has spent 273 days in hospital undergoing treatment for a tumour in her femur. She is now nearing the end of her chemotherapy.

Despite being away from home for months, Ruby remained upbeat, revealing she is a huge Billie Eilish fan and sharing her excitement about meeting actress Margot Robbie during a surprise visit to the hospital.

Ruby said one of the hardest parts of being in hospital has been being away from home, particularly her beloved dog Thor and her best friend Holly. The teenager revealed Holly shaved her head in support, describing her as really special.

From Patient to Doctor

The fundraiser also highlights the lasting impact of children's hospitals. 7NEWS reporter Angela Cox shared the story of former patient Darcy Sharp, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth and underwent years of treatment and rehabilitation. Inspired by the medical team who cared for him, Sharp is now on the verge of completing his medical degree.

Support and Entertainment

Throughout the morning, Mac was joined by 7NEWS presenter Mel McLaughlin, who reflected on the importance of supporting children and families facing serious illness. Entertainment included the appearance of a unicorn, bringing joy to the hospitalised kids and their families.
