FIFA slammed as World Cup referee denied entry to USA sparks outrage
World Cup referee denied entry to USA, FIFA slammed

The football world has erupted in anger after FIFA remained silent while a World Cup referee was denied entry into the United States. Omar Artan, who was set to become the first Somali to officiate at a World Cup this month, was stopped at Miami airport despite holding a valid visa.

Background of the Incident

Artan's denial stems from a travel ban imposed by former President Donald Trump on individuals from Somalia in December. The referee's exclusion has drawn sharp criticism from pundits, fans, and officials, who accuse FIFA of failing to protect its officials.

FIFA issued a statement saying it had been "informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present" and added that it cannot overturn the decision since visa determinations are the host country's prerogative.

Reactions from Officials

Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ciise Aden Abshir, condemned the move, stating: "Denying him entry to the United States and preventing him from officiating scheduled matches harms not only him personally but also undermines football's commitment to fairness, merit, and the spirit of fair play."

Artan himself remained positive, thanking supporters and saying: "Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my football career. I would like to thank FIFA and the CAF for their support and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future."

Outrage from Pundits and Media

Former Socceroo Craig Foster expressed disbelief: "This is beyond ridiculous. And yet FIFA is silent while fans, players, staff, officials are denied entry to play in, work in, or watch their own World Cup. Crazy times."

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova also weighed in, using strong language to criticize the decision. Journalist Nima Tavallaey Roodsari added: "And not a word of support from FIFA President 'today I feel gay/disabled/etc' Infantino. What a disgrace FIFA is."

Borzou Daragahi, another journalist, called the situation "outrageous" and suggested FIFA should move all games to Mexico and Canada.

The controversy has reignited debates about the US travel ban and FIFA's responsibility to ensure equal treatment for all participants in the World Cup.
