Trump Storms Out of NBC Interview Over 2020 Election Dispute
Trump Walks Out of NBC Interview After Heated Exchange

United States President Donald Trump has abruptly ended an interview with NBC News after a heated exchange over his repeated claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. The confrontation unfolded during an appearance on Meet the Press, where host Kristen Welker challenged President Trump over allegations he has made for years about voter fraud and election interference.

Interview Turns Tense

The interview became increasingly tense as Welker questioned the US President about evidence supporting his claims that the 2020 election had been “rigged”. President Trump responded by turning his criticism towards NBC. “You’re a one-sided crooked network,” he said. “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.” President Trump then brought the interview to an abrupt conclusion. “I sat in the rain with you for an hour,” he said. “On and off in the rain, and I’ve given you enough time. You ought to straighten out your press. A country can never be great with a dishonest press.”

Anti-Weaponisation Fund Discussion

The clash came after discussion turned to a proposed US$1.8 billion "anti-weaponisation" fund, which had been designed to compensate people who believed they had been unfairly targeted by federal investigations. Acting Attorney-General Todd Blanche confirmed to lawmakers last week that the Justice Department had abandoned the proposal. Asked about the fund, President Trump said he remained supportive of the concept. "Now, I don’t know what’s going to happen with the weaponisation fund. I love the idea," he said. "People like stupid Biden, he’s not smart enough to know what’s going on, but people that surrounded him… what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong."

Continued Dispute Over 2020 Election

Welker pushed back on those claims before the discussion shifted back to the 2020 election. “The election was rigged. It was a dirty election,” President Trump said. The NBC host noted that the President had not provided evidence proving the election was stolen, prompting a prolonged back-and-forth between the pair. President Trump has continued to dispute the outcome of the 2020 contest despite multiple court rulings, state reviews and federal investigations finding no evidence of widespread fraud capable of altering the result.

The NBC interview was filmed outdoors in difficult weather conditions, something President Trump repeatedly referenced as the discussion became more confrontational. Welker later revealed the pair spoke after filming concluded. She confirmed President Trump had agreed to sit down for another interview in the future. No date has yet been announced for that follow-up conversation.
