A major fire broke out at a recycling centre in south London on Monday evening, drawing a significant emergency response and causing widespread disruption. Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were deployed to the scene on Landmann Way in Bermondsey after the blaze was reported just after 5:30 PM.
The London Fire Brigade dispatched crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, and Greenwich, along with two 32-metre turntable ladders to combat the flames. Social media footage captured dramatic images of thick, black smoke billowing high into the sky, visible from various parts of the city.
The fire also impacted rail travel in the area. Passengers planning to travel between Charing Cross and London Bridge were advised to check service updates before departing and consider postponing their journeys if possible. Southeastern Railway confirmed that services on the Hastings line were starting and terminating at Tonbridge in Kent due to the incident.
Residents living near the recycling centre were urged by the London Fire Brigade to keep windows and doors closed to avoid inhaling smoke. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as firefighters work to bring the blaze under control.
