US Strikes Iran After Helicopter Attack

Welcome to our live coverage of US politics and the Middle East.

US Launches Strikes Against Iran

The US military has launched strikes against Iran in response to what it calls “unjustified Iranian aggression,” following the downing of a US Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump had earlier warned that the “US must respond” to the attack.

The strikes come just hours after Trump again suggested a peace deal with Iran was close. Meanwhile, Israel has resumed bombing Lebanon despite US demands to stop, complicating efforts for a peace deal with Iran. At least eight people died in the southern city of Tyre on Tuesday, local time, following an Israeli attack. This occurred just a day after Israel and Iran agreed to stop targeting one another.

Tehran claims it attacked Israel in retaliation for its Lebanon incursion. However, President Trump has reportedly warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel risks being “left alone” to fight Iran if it continues to escalate military action.
