Australian surfer Morgan Cibilic has advanced to the semi-finals of the New Zealand Pro after snatching a last-ditch wave in the dying moments of his quarterfinal heat. The performance kept his hopes alive on the World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series, where he is aiming to regain his spot on the Championship Tour.
Dramatic Finish Secures Victory
Cibilic, who hails from Newcastle, was trailing in his quarterfinal heat until he caught a critical wave with just seconds remaining. The wave earned him a score of 7.50, enough to edge past his opponent and claim the win. The crowd erupted as the buzzer sounded, with Cibilic pumping his fist in celebration.
“I knew I needed something special, and I just went for it,” Cibilic said after the heat. “I’m stoked to get through and keep the dream alive.”
Strong Form Continues
The 24-year-old has been in impressive form at the event, showcasing his trademark aggressive style and wave selection. He previously won his round of 32 heat and followed up with a solid performance in the round of 16. The New Zealand Pro is the fourth stop on the Challenger Series, which serves as a pathway to the elite Championship Tour.
Cibilic’s best result this season came at the Sydney Surf Pro, where he finished runner-up. He is currently ranked inside the top 10 on the Challenger Series leaderboard, and a strong result in New Zealand could boost his chances of qualifying for the 2025 Championship Tour.
Semifinal Showdown Awaits
Cibilic will now face a tough opponent in the semi-finals, with the competition heating up. The event has attracted a strong field, including several former Championship Tour surfers. Cibilic remains confident in his abilities, saying he is ready for the challenge.
“I’ve been putting in the work, and it’s paying off. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and trust my surfing,” he said.
Fans back home in Newcastle will be watching closely as Cibilic aims to continue his run. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place later today, with the final set for tomorrow. A win would not only boost his rankings but also provide a significant confidence boost for the remainder of the season.
