Learner driver charged after fatal crash kills toddler

A learner driver has been charged following a devastating three-car crash in Sydney's west that claimed the lives of a 15-month-old boy and a 42-year-old man. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 PM on May 18 at the intersection of Mamre Road and Abbotts Road in Kemps Creek.

According to police reports, a sedan collided head-on with a van at the intersection. The toddler was in the back seat of the sedan with his 25-year-old mother. A male passenger in the sedan died at the scene, while the young boy and his mother were rushed to hospital with critical injuries. The toddler succumbed to his injuries within hours, while the mother remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The alleged driver of the sedan, a 21-year-old male who was on his learner's permit, and the male van driver both sustained minor injuries. Police arrested the sedan driver on Sunday and charged him with 12 offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and negligent driving occasioning death.

He is expected to appear before Liverpool Local Court on Monday. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities are appealing for any witnesses or those with dashcam footage to come forward.
