Serena Williams is set to continue her remarkable comeback to professional tennis, with organisers confirming on Friday that she will compete in the women's doubles at the upcoming WTA event in Berlin. The tournament, scheduled for June, marks another significant step in the American legend's return after an absence of nearly four years.
Williams' Statement on Berlin
In a statement, the 44-year-old expressed her excitement about returning to the German capital. "Every tournament I add to my schedule right now is special, and Berlin is no exception," Williams said. "I look forward to playing in front of the German crowd and continuing to build momentum for the grass-court season."
The identity of her doubles partner has yet to be announced, adding an element of anticipation for fans.
Road to Wimbledon
Earlier this week, Williams confirmed her participation at London's Queen's Club tournament, which begins on June 8. The Berlin Tennis Open, starting June 15, serves as a traditional warm-up event for Wimbledon, which gets underway on June 29. Williams has won Wimbledon seven times in singles and six times in doubles, making her return particularly noteworthy.
Nine of the WTA's top 10 players are expected to compete in Berlin, underscoring the tournament's prestige. Williams' last match on tour was a third-round exit at the US Open in September 2022.
