St Mary's Technical School Abuse Allegations Prompt Witness Search
St Mary's School Abuse Allegations Witness Search

Police have launched a fresh appeal for witnesses to historical abuse at St Mary's Technical School in Geelong, following new allegations of physical and sexual abuse at the Catholic institution.

The investigation, code-named Operation Pennine, is examining claims of abuse dating back several decades. Detectives from the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are seeking former students, staff, and anyone with information about the school, which operated until the 1970s.

New Allegations Surface

The renewed appeal comes after a former student came forward with allegations of serious physical and sexual abuse by multiple staff members during the 1960s. The victim, now in his 60s, reported the abuse to police earlier this year, prompting the investigation.

Detective Senior Constable Lisa Wilson said the alleged abuse occurred over several years and involved multiple perpetrators. “We believe there may be other victims and witnesses who have not yet come forward,” she said. “We urge anyone with information to contact us.”

Historical Context

St Mary's Technical School, run by the Christian Brothers, was a boys' school in Geelong's Newtown area. It closed in the 1970s, with many records now difficult to locate. The school has been the subject of previous abuse claims, but police say new evidence has emerged.

Operation Pennine is part of a broader police effort to investigate historical child sexual abuse in religious and institutional settings. The team has previously dealt with cases from other Catholic schools in the region.

Appeal for Information

Police are particularly interested in speaking with former students who attended the school between 1950 and 1970, as well as former staff members or anyone who may have witnessed abusive behaviour. They also seek anyone who may have documents, photographs, or other records from the school.

“We understand that coming forward can be difficult, but we have specialist support available,” Detective Wilson said. “Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be crucial.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.

Support for Victims

Support services are available for victims of historical abuse. The police have partnered with the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Centre Against Sexual Assault to provide counselling and assistance to those who come forward.

The Catholic Church has also been contacted for comment, but has not yet responded to the latest allegations. In past cases, the church has apologised for abuse and implemented safeguarding measures.
