The City of Perth's homelessness support services are set to relocate from their current Moore Street premises to make way for the Royal Perth Hospital emergency department expansion project. The move, scheduled for Monday, June 22, will see the service shift to 158 Royal Street, East Perth, approximately 500 metres away from the existing location.
Reason for relocation
The relocation is necessary to accommodate the construction of a new six-storey building at the northern end of the Royal Perth Hospital site, which will house a larger emergency department. Concerns were raised that increased hospital-related traffic associated with the major redevelopment would render the Moore Street location unsuitable for ongoing operations.
Service continuity
The city has emphasised its commitment to minimising disruption for service users and providers. The accredited services program, in partnership with various community organisations, provides meals, clothing, healthcare support, and access to essential amenities for vulnerable individuals across Perth. Operating hours will remain unchanged following the move.
Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds stated: "These services provide vital support to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and our priority is to ensure people can continue accessing that support with as little disruption as possible. While the relocation is necessary to accommodate the Royal Perth Hospital expansion project, we have worked closely with the State Government to identify a suitable nearby location and support a smooth transition for both service providers and users of the service."
Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey added: "Our Government worked with the city and these important services to find a nearby location that is well-serviced and close to public transport. This will ensure construction of this vital piece of health infrastructure can progress with minimal disruption to the city's accredited services."
The current Moore Street site will close after services conclude on Sunday, June 21, with operations commencing at the new Royal Street location the following day. The new site is conveniently located near public transport links, ensuring continued accessibility for those in need.
