Four teenagers were winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after becoming lost in dense bushland near Cairns on Sunday afternoon. The group, aged between 14 and 16, had been hiking in the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park when they lost their way and called emergency services for help.
Search and Rescue Operation
Emergency services launched a search operation after receiving a distress call around 3:30 pm. The Cairns-based rescue helicopter was dispatched to locate the missing teens. Using thermal imaging technology, the crew spotted the group in a remote area of the park and winched them one by one to safety.
Teenagers in Good Health
The teenagers were assessed by paramedics at the scene and were found to be in good health, with no injuries reported. They were then reunited with their relieved families. Queensland Ambulance Service praised the teens for staying calm and following instructions during the ordeal.
Authorities have reminded hikers to carry adequate supplies, including water, a phone, and a map, and to let someone know their planned route before heading into bushland. The Mount Whitfield Conservation Park is a popular hiking destination, but its rugged terrain can be challenging for inexperienced bushwalkers.
