A prisoner at Western Plains Correctional Centre was stabbed on Wednesday, marking the third violent attack at the facility in just one week. The incident has intensified concerns about safety and security at the prison, located near Geelong.
Details of the Attack
The stabbing occurred in a common area of the prison during the afternoon. The inmate, whose identity has not been released, sustained injuries to his upper body and was treated by medical staff on-site before being transported to a hospital. His condition is reported as stable.
Police have been notified and are investigating the incident. No weapons have been recovered, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrator.
Rising Violence at the Facility
This attack follows two other violent incidents earlier in the week. On Monday, a fight broke out between multiple inmates, resulting in minor injuries. On Tuesday, a prison officer was assaulted while attempting to break up a disturbance.
The series of incidents has prompted calls for an immediate review of security protocols at Western Plains Correctional Centre. The prison, which houses medium-security inmates, has a history of overcrowding and understaffing issues.
Response from Authorities
Corrections Victoria has confirmed the stabbing and stated that an internal investigation is underway. A spokesperson said, “The safety of prisoners and staff is our top priority. We are working closely with police to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
However, the Prison Officers Union has criticized the government for failing to address chronic understaffing. “This is a crisis,” said union secretary Wayne Gatt. “Officers are being put at risk every day because there simply aren’t enough staff to manage the population.”
Broader Context
The spate of violence at Western Plains is part of a worrying trend across Victoria’s prison system. Data from the Department of Justice shows a 15% increase in assaults on prisoners and staff over the past year, with overcrowding cited as a key factor.
Western Plains, designed to hold 1,100 inmates, currently houses over 1,300. This overcrowding has led to tensions and a rise in contraband, including weapons.
Local MP and opposition spokesperson for corrections, David Davis, called for an independent inquiry. “We cannot allow this to continue. The Andrews government must act now to prevent further bloodshed,” he said.
The prison remains under lockdown as investigations continue. Visitation has been suspended until further notice.
