The Sutherland Shire community is in mourning after two men were killed in a devastating head-on collision in Sans Souci early Saturday morning. The victims have been identified as 28-year-old Seamus Duignan, a passionate heavy metal fan and Melbourne Storm supporter, and his Uber driver, 22-year-old Shoaib Hussain, who was on his final trip of the night.
Duignan was returning home from a Fear Factory concert at Moore Park’s Liberty Hall when a speeding Audi crossed onto the wrong side of Rocky Point Road, striking the rideshare vehicle head-on. The driver of the Audi, 42-year-old father Tamati Gilbert, also died at the scene.
Friends remember a generous soul
Friend Mitchell McLean described Duignan as one of the most kind-hearted people he had ever met. “Seamus is one of those blokes that would give you the shirt off his own back,” McLean said. “One of the most kind-hearted people you’ll ever meet.”
Hussain’s friend Naseem Naqvi echoed similar sentiments. “He was a very, very kind person, very hardworking. He was studying, and working as a disability social worker as well,” Naqvi said.
Band pays tribute
The American industrial metal band Fear Factory, who had performed that night, also expressed their condolences. Bassist Dino Cazares shared a video on Facebook, saying, “We were deeply saddened to hear about the tragic accident involving one of our fans who attended the Sydney show. Our thoughts and condolences go out to their family, friends and everyone affected by this loss.”
Police welfare check before crash
Ten minutes before the collision, police had conducted a welfare check on Gilbert at his home in Gymea Bay. However, before officers could speak with him, he left the scene. The circumstances surrounding the moments between the welfare check and the fatal crash will be investigated by the coroner.
Community fundraising
Friends and strangers have already raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the families of the victims. McLean reflected on the tragedy, saying, “It’s been pretty hard on me and my mates. Life’s so precious, and you never really know what could happen.”
The incident has left the local community devastated, with many rallying to provide financial and emotional support to the bereaved families.
