Woolworths Axes Single-Handle Baskets After Backlash

Woolworths has finally listened to customer complaints and axed its controversial single-handle shopping baskets, which have been widely criticized since their introduction in 2023. The supermarket giant announced it is rolling out a new two-handle design across all stores nationwide, much to the delight of many shoppers.

Customer Complaints Lead to Change

The single-handle baskets, introduced as part of an eco-friendly overhaul at both Coles and Woolworths in 2023, were met with widespread backlash. Customers complained that the baskets were awkward to carry, with the weight unevenly distributed, causing discomfort. Some stores even resorted to bringing back the old two-handle baskets to appease shoppers.

“In response to customer feedback, we are currently rolling out a new shopping basket with an enhanced ergonomic, twin handle design,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au. “The new baskets have been designed with customer comfort and sustainability in mind – with each of the new baskets made from recycled materials, including at least 18 milk bottles.”

Social Media Erupts

News of the change sparked excitement on social media, with many shoppers expressing relief. “Anyone else excited about the new baskets with the handles the right way around now? The redesign with the single handle going long ways just wasn’t great,” wrote one customer who had already spotted the new baskets in their local store. Another commented, “This is so good, I’m disabled and found the other ones almost impossible to use on days I was using my cane.”

However, not everyone is thrilled. Some customers have expressed a preference for the single-handle design. “Am I the only one who liked the one handle? Man it’s like nobody else in the world knows how to hold a basket!?” one person remarked. Another added, “Single handed is so much better.”

The new two-handle baskets are made from 100% recycled plastic and are larger than their predecessors. Woolworths expects the rollout to be complete by September, though some stores already have the new baskets in stock.
