Barbeques Galore to Close 62 Stores After Rescue Deal Collapses
Barbeques Galore to Close 62 Stores After Rescue Deal Fails

Hundreds of workers at Barbeques Galore face an uncertain future after the iconic Australian barbecue retailer announced it would shut 62 of its stores, following the collapse of a last-ditch deal to save the struggling company.

Rescue Deal Fails

The chain entered voluntary administration in February 2026. Plans for Gordon Brothers to recapitalise the business under a proposed deed of company arrangement failed to secure commercial trading terms with suppliers. The proposal, which included a $5 million payment to creditors, was supported by creditors but negotiations with counterparties, including landlords and suppliers, did not reach acceptable commercial terms.

Receivers Ankura received several expressions of interest, but last month it became clear there were no offers to acquire or recapitalise the business.

Transition to Winding Up

“Following negotiations in recent weeks, the Barbeques Galore Group has reached the position where the conditions to the deed of company arrangement proposal are not capable of being implemented,” an Ankura spokesman said. “Since there is no other … proposal or transaction capable of implementation, the BBQG Group will transition to winding up with effect from 16 June 2026.”

Dozens of stores are expected to close next week, and transitional arrangements for 27 franchisee-owned stores are underway. About 500 staff members are expected to receive their full entitlements and benefits.

Impact on Customers

Retail and franchisee stores will continue operating as normal during the receivership process. Gift cards will be honoured until June 30, with a condition that for every $1 of gift card credit redeemed, the holder must provide $2 in new consideration. For example, to redeem a $50 gift card, a customer must make a purchase of $150, with $100 paid after applying the gift card credit. Customer deposits will continue to be honoured as usual.
