A woman has sustained severe burns and an infant has been treated for smoke inhalation following a room fire in a popular Gold Coast strip. Emergency services were called to a residence on Brisbane Road at Biggera Waters around 1:45 AM local time on Friday.
Upon arrival, paramedics discovered a woman in her 30s with serious burns to her hands, abdomen, and thighs. The Queensland Ambulance Service reported that she was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition.
An infant who was at the scene was assessed and also taken to the hospital, though in a stable condition. Firefighters and paramedics remained at the location to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and the area was declared safe.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities have reminded residents to ensure smoke alarms are working and to have a fire escape plan in place.
