ACT Policing has charged a 39-year-old Belconnen man following the discovery of a 3D printed firearm and other prohibited weapons during a search warrant executed on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
Police executed a search warrant at a residence in Belconnen around 8am on Wednesday, where they allegedly located a 3D printed firearm, a shortened firearm, ammunition, and other prohibited weapons. The man was taken into custody and later charged with multiple firearms offences.
Charges Laid
The man faces charges including possessing a 3D printed firearm without a licence, possessing a shortened firearm, and possessing ammunition without a licence. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Detective Acting Inspector Stephen Ladd said the discovery of 3D printed firearms was a growing concern for law enforcement. "These weapons are difficult to detect and can be manufactured without serial numbers, making them untraceable," he said. "The community should be aware that possessing such items is illegal and carries serious penalties."
Police Warning
ACT Policing has reiterated that the possession of 3D printed firearms is illegal under the Firearms Act 1996. Anyone with information about illegal firearms is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The investigation is ongoing, and police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community.
